Window or door.?
Standing in front of Looking Glass, a 'no-door-single-window' gallery
in the center of Brussels, one can be surprised or pleasantly amused by
the artwork shown inside. The 'reflective' surface however is only a tiny
fragment of an invisible network that lays behind it and in that way does
actually have some sort of entrance after all. Not only for the artist.!
It is beautiful to see how a successful concept like the Looking Glass,
driven by an energetic Annemie Maes, recently merged complexless with
Code31 and Machine Cent'red Humanz into a new entity named OKNO. With
each of them specialized in a certain discipline, rooted in the past,
it quickly became a flexible center covering four sections in support
of art and technology: research, development, presentation and publication.
Luckily, this didn't result in OKNO totally focused on itself, as over
time a 'closed system' would cause a certain death for their interdisciplinary
research. In order to stay 'alive', the center decided to actively participate
in another bigger, more open and continuously transforming network formed
by multiple initiatives in and outside of Brussels.
The city hereby gained not only a great new media center, but also an
active model for others. Hopefully they will look through the window ..
and beyond.!
